Article- We Can’t Just Show Up For Social Justice Issues When It Impacts Our Own Lives
Educator and activist, Brittany Packnett, poses a vital question to those who identify as allies in social justice movements:
Would I care this much about __________ rights if someone I loved weren’t _________?
She offers excellent, moving commentary about the necessity for us all to continue to grow in such a way that solidarity is a core part of the fabric of our beings, regardless of proximity to an issue. She states that,
“It is human nature to have both an increased awareness of and sensitivity to the issues you can relate to. But if we’re going to get free, and get there together, we have to be willing to step beyond our personal experiences and into the humanity of others.”
