Associate Shirley Guidry May 21, 1928 – September 8, 2024, Accepted December 6, 2009
Life-long Californian Associate Shirley Guidry first became familiar with BVMs through her daughter’s active engagement with a Just Faith group. Her interest in BVM spirituality grew during an immersion experience in Quito, Ecuador led by BVMs Elizabeth Avalos and Lou Anglin (d.). That trip to Quito was also family time as she, Carol, Francis De Carvalho (Shirley’s youngest daughter and son-in-law), and one of their sons joined the volunteers. Shirley found her skills as a teaching assistant beneficial while volunteering at the Working Boys Center, much like they were when she worked for the Superintendent of Los Angeles County Special Education.
Shirley journeyed with Sister Mary Jean Ferry, BVM and sisters and associates in Glendale for her discernment process. Shirley’s associate acceptance date is the same date that Carol and Francis held their associate commitment ceremony. Shirley shared in community living at Walnut Commons with Carol and Francis after living near her elder daughter, Nancy in Tehachapi, Calif.
Shirley liked to keep her faith in motion, first in prayer and then in action for as long as she was able. She was active in many of the associate activities and other volunteering opportunities. She was filled with care for others, personable, and known for her wit. Throughout her time as an associate, all the BVM core values inspired her volunteerism, especially the value of freedom to serve others in love.
Shirley Guidry’s life will be celebrated in the common room at Walnut Commons in Santa Cruz, Calif. on Sunday, Oct. 20. Sister Elizabeth Avalos, BVM will preside at the Celebration of her Life.
