Let Justice and Peace Flow: Season of Creation 2023

Come celebrate with us!
You are invited to join the Dubuque Catholic Social Justice Network and the Dubuque Interfaith Green Coalition to reflect on our place in creation Sept.1–Oct. 4. Events are part of the global movement for the Season of Creation, an annual month-long season when Christian communities pray and act to protect creation.

Aug. 31, 5:30 p.m.—Kick off event on Dubuque’s River Walk. We will gather at the gazebo, 350 E. 3rd St. at the Port of Dubuque adjacent to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium parking lot.

Sept. 1, 8:00 a.m.—Online international opening prayer service by the Season of Creation Steering and Advisory Committee. See seasonofcreation.org. Bishop Richard Pates, Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Dubuque will provide an local opening statement for the season at dbqarch.org.

Sept. 9, 7:00 a.m.–Noon—Dubuque Farmer’s Market. Stop by our tent for information on how you can take action to care for creation.

Sept. 10–Oct. 1, Sunday evenings—“Caring for God’s Creation” Adult Faith Formation series. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2155 University Ave. Meal at 5:30 p.m., class from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Will use books “Inhabiting Eden: Christians, The Bible and the Ecological Crisis” by Patricia Tull and “50 Ways to Help Save the Earth (Revised Edition): How You and Your Church Can Make a Difference” by Rebecca Barnes. Books available at River Lights Bookstore. Register with Tom at tomstov@aol.com.

Sept. 11–14: Take Action Online—Urge Congress to Support a Just Farm Bill in 2023! Join with Midwest Franciscan Justice Promoters to insist Congress supports a just Farm Bill that strengthens SNAP, maintains international programs against hunger, supports family farmers, and addresses climate change. Sept. 21, 7:00 p.m.—”Making Peace in Our Polarized Society” presented by International Day of Peace Speaker, Dr. Peter Coleman. Loras College Alumni Campus Center. Sponsored by the Dubuque International Day of Peace Committee. www.facebook.com/dbqdayofpeace. Free program.

Sept. 23, 10:00 a.m.—Outdoor Interfaith service at Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1040 Carmel Dr., Park on Grandview Ave., and take short walk to riverfront. Bring your own chair.

Sept. 30, TBA—Online prayer vigil “Together—Gathering the People of God.” Register at seasonofcreation.org.

Oct. 4—Screening of the film “The Letter” highlighting Pope Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’: On Care of Our Common Home” at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium, 350 E. 3rd St. Cosponsored by the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Reception at 6:00PM, film begins at 6:30PM with panel discussion to follow. The event is free, but pre-registration is required, visit www.rivermuseum.com/events.

Season of Creation: The Season the Creation is an annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home. It take place from September 1—the World Day of Prayer for Creation to October 4, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. Learn more: https://seasonofcreation.org.
