Sister Mary Jeanne (John Edward) Stopper, BVM (John Edward), 93, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, at Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa
Visitation, the Sharing of Memories, and Mass of Christian Burial were on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. Burial was in the Mount Carmel cemetery.
Sister Mary Jeanne was born on May 5, 1931, in Los Angeles, to George & Pearl (Bertin) Stopper. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1949, from Holy Family Parish, Glendale, Calif. She professed first vows on March 19, 1952, and final vows on July 16, 1957.
Sister Mary Jeanne was an elementary teacher at Presentation, Chicago; St. Robert Bellarmine, Burbank, Calif.; St. Agnes and St. Francis Xavier, Phoenix; and St. Charles Borromeo in North Hollywood, Calif., where she also was principal. She ministered as a high school English teacher, office staff, and volunteer at Holy Family, Glendale, Calif.
“Mary Jeanne was truly a very special person – kind, accepting, outgoing, joyful, and very engaged in life happening around her and the ministry to which she was called. She loved her family, was dedicated to her students, remained faithful to her beloved BVM community and to God.“ (Eulogy).
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John “Jack” (Tomalu) Stopper, Brother Edward “Ed” Stopper, FSC, and William “Bill” Stopper; and sisters Sister Suzanne Stopper, BVM, and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Chuck) Gower. She is survived by a sister-in-law Letty Stopper, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 75 years.
