Therese (Ann Carmelle) Frelo, BVM
Sister Therese (Ann Carmelle) Frelo, BVM died Friday, August 17, 2018, at Marian Hall in Dubuque, Iowa.
Visitation, Sharing of Memories, and Mass of Christian Burial were on on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, in the Marian Hall Chapel. Burial is in the Mount Carmel cemetery.
Sister Therese was born in Chicago on Aug. 8, 1930, to Anthony and Johanna Weir Frelo. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1950, from Holy Family Parish, Chicago. She professed first vows on March 19, 1953, and final vows on July 16, 1958.
Sister was an elementary teacher in Davenport, Iowa; Chicago; Cicero, Ill.; and Clarksdale, Miss., where she also ministered as a secondary teacher; and principal in Memphis, Tenn. She served the congregation as Office of Ministry coordinator and regional representative. She was the development director for an inter-congregational ministry resource center in Chicago.
“For her Golden Jubilee, Therese wrote, ‘I have been gifted with many friends, good health and a loving community. Never did I dream . . . that I would have the opportunities for professional and spiritual growth that the BVM congregation has provided for me. My experiences as a BVM, . . . have broadened my view of church, society and [the] needs of the poor and, therefore, have contributed to make me who I am today—a BVM striving “to be free in order to free others in God’s steadfast love.’” Confident in God’s love and promises, we rejoice for Therese now at peace in God’s dwelling place.” (Eulogy)
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Rita Russo, and a brother Anthony. She is survived by nephews and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 67 years.
Memorials may be given to Sisters of Charity, BVM Support Fund, 1100 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, IA 52003 or make an online gift.
