2017 Jubilarians

Sister Linda Roby, BVM was born in Omaha, Neb., and professed final vows on April 18, 1976. In Dubuque, she served as formation director at Mount Carmel. She taught elementary students at St. John School for the Deaf in Milwaukee; and taught elementary school at St. Pius X in Des Moines, Iowa; and St. Clare in Portland, Ore., where she also served the Portland Regional Center as a visiting teacher for elementary and secondary school Deaf students integrated into regular classrooms. She currently ministers as director of Catholic Deaf Ministry for the Archdiocese of Portland, a position she has held for many years.

Sister Linda shares, “I’ve been blessed to have worked with the Deaf most of my ministerial life, especially in my 30 years with the Catholic Deaf in the Portland Archdiocese. Their unique language and culture—and their strong sense of community and care for each other—inspire me. As a faith community we’ve extended this care to include outreach to those in need in our neighborhood and around the world. Deaf leadership and pride are alive and well in Portland!”

A celebration for Sister Linda will also take place in Portland at the end of June.

Sister Joan Nuckols, BVM was born in Butte, Mont., and professed final vows on June 12, 1977.She taught at Xavier HS in St. Louis; Xavier HS in Phoenix; and South Central Jr. HS and Butte Central HS in Butte, Mont. She then ministered at Xavier College Preparatory HS in Phoenix as teacher, campus minister, and vice principal for Academics and Campus Ministry. She currently serves as principal at Xavier College Preparatory.

“Being a BVM is the core to who I am, what I do, how I share God’s blessings in my life,” says Sister Joan. “Living in community these past 50 years is a great blessing in my life. I have been privileged and encouraged to do so many things—teaching history, being campus minister, vice principal, and now principal. I have been very fortunate to travel as a BVM to so many places. Most memorable has been the Lourdes Pilgrimage during Holy Week which helps me to realize the worldwide Catholic community and respond to the journey that God calls each of us to follow.”

A celebration Mass and reception will be held at Xavier College Preparatory, Oct. 21, 2017, to celebrate her golden jubilee.

Sister Lynn Winsor, BVM was born in Fond Du Lac, Wis., and professed final vows on April 17, 1976. She taught physical education and coached at Xavier HS in St. Louis.In Phoenix, she taught physical education and coached basketball, golf and softball at Xavier College Preparatory HS, where she later served as vice principal for Activities/Athletic Director, positions in which she continues to minister today. She is a certified master athletic administrator, coaches golf, and is active in state and national organizations related to athletics.

“My ministry as a BVM sister revolves around the broad spectrum of activities, athletics and sports. What better way to experience God’s love than through gift of movement, positive interaction with others, and teaching through example values like honesty, integrity, justice and charity through the medium of sports and athletics,” shares Sister Lynn. “To be a BVM for me means increasing my relationship with Christ, sharing community life with my BVM sisters, and serving God’s people in the Catholic secondary school setting.”

Sister Mary Paul Francis Bailey, BVM was born in Springfield, Ill. Sister taught elementary and secondary school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Milwaukee; Kansas City, Mo.; Clarksdale, Miss.; and Rock Island and Chicago, Ill., where she was also on the faculty at Mundelein College and Loyola University Chicago; and was treasurer at the Immaculata HS. At Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, she served as economics department chair and instructor, part-time economics instructor/director of student accounts, and student loan clerk.

Sister Gayle Brabec, BVM (Luellen) was born in Perham, Minn. Sister taught elementary school in Chicago; Boulder, Colo; and Kauai, Hawaii; and was principal in Butte, Mont. She was audio visual coordinator in Hempstead and West Hempstead, N.Y. She served in rural ministry in Davenport, Knoxville, Wesley, and Sac City, Iowa; and was director of rural life offices in Kentucky. She served the BVM congregation as a regional representative in Davenport, Iowa.

Sister Mary Judine Bruch, BVM was born in Granite City, Ill. Sister taught elementary school in Chicago, San Francisco, and Missoula, Mont., and was principal in Omaha, Neb. She served in parish ministry in Denver and as self-employed counselor in Wheat Ridge, Colo., for many years.

Sister Jeanne Granville, BVM (Suzette) was born in St. Louis. Sister taught and/or was principal in Chicago, Maywood, Round Lake, and Calumet Park, Ill.; Hempstead, N.Y.; and Jackson, Miss. In the St. Louis area, she served as director of N. Deanery Elementary Schools, Catholic School Office; coordinator of the EDUC Program, Talton Outreach Center; school principal; director of parish outreach; and volunteer in immigrant/refugee work.

Sister Helen Marie Macatee, BVM was born in Hollywood, Calif. Sister taught elementary school in Chicago; Fort Dodge and Muscatine, Iowa; Hempstead and West Hempstead, N.Y.; Tucson and Phoenix, Ariz.; North Hollywood and Santa Ana, Calif.; St. Louis; and in Zimbabwe, Africa. She worked in nursing and as driver/assistant at Mount Carmel, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Eileen McGovern, BVM (James Leone) was born in Dubuque, Iowa. Sister taught elementary school in Lincoln, Neb.; San Francisco; and Des Moines, Iowa. She taught on the university level in Bogotá, Columbia, and Salta, Argentina. She ministered as school social worker in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

In Dubuque, Sister taught at Clarke University, where she was sociology department chair. She was psychiatric social worker in Dubuque/Jackson County, clinical social worker at the Gannon Center, and speech/Spanish therapist and family/marriage counselor for Catholic Charities. She served the BVM congregation as vice president and later as pastoral care volunteer at Mount Carmel.

Sister Ann Daniel O’Neill, BVM was born in Chicago. Sister taught elementary school in Dubuque, Marcus, and Emmetsburg, Iowa; Chicago and Berwyn, Ill.; Wilmot, Wis.; and Rapid City, S.D. She served the BVM congregation as associate administrator at Mount Carmel, Dubuque, and was a school volunteer in Waterloo, Iowa.

Sister Marion Pasdiora, BVM (Jean Victor) was born in Chicago. Sister taught elementary and secondary school in Lead, S.D.; Boone, Sioux City, and Fort Dodge, Iowa; and Wilmot, Wis. She served as high school bursar/treasurer, business manager, and teacher in Mundelein, Ill., where she was later secretary at a university, and volunteered as assistant sacristan.

Sister Joan Redden, BVM (James Irene) was born in Chicago. Sister taught elementary and secondary school in Davenport, Clinton, and Iowa City, Iowa; Chicago and North Chicago, Cicero, Lombard, and Lake Forest, Ill.; and Seattle and Mountlake Terrace, Wash. She was an assistant apartment manager in Waukegan, and religious education director in Oakbrook Terrace, both in Illinois. She was a volunteer for many years at Mount Carmel, Dubuque, Iowa.

Sister Virginia Stone, BVM (Alice Rose) was born in Milwaukee. Sister taught elementary school and/or was principal in Clermont, Iowa; Bellerose and West Hempstead, N.Y.; and Maywood, Chicago, and Antioch, Ill., where she was also parish minister. She served as religious education coordinator in Union Grove and Milwaukee, Wis. She was consultant for the Office for Parish Councils and Spirituality Formation/ Spirituality for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, where she currently ministers as spirituality consultant.

Sister Margaret Zimmerman, BVM (Jamesella) was born in Milwaukee. Sister taught elementary school in Kansas City, Mo.; Lincoln, Ill.; and Phoenix. In California, she taught elementary school in Tujunga and N. Hollywood; was principal in N. Hollywood and Santa Ana; and served as associate superintendent for the Diocese of Orange. In Chicago, she served as administrator at BVM residence Wright Hall and as a BVM regional representative. She was administrator of the BVM Center anddirector of the BVM Retirement Finance Office at Mount Carmel, Dubuque, Iowa, where she later volunteered.
